Cub Selby/York Weekend

Sat 7th October - Sun 9th October 2005

Saltney Ferry Cub Scouts had a brilliant weekend at Selby in October 2005. The weekend took part at Tamarak Campsite, the district campsite for Selby. During the weekend we visited York Railway Museum, which was last visited by the group in 1977(when I was a Cub!!!!)

We left our headquarters on Friday night. After our usual wrong turns, and a tour of Selby by night, we still managed to arrive before 9pm. We then had our supper, and they settled down into our new home.

On Saturday morning it was an 8am get up, in order to feed the animals (no actually the Cubs, but sometimes it was hard to tell!). We then set off for York, and the Railway Museum. On entering the museum, we heard an almighty thump. Looking over to find out that a car had decided to run into a bus, and provide drama to start off the Cubs day. After prizing the lads away from the window, we eventually got into the museum halls. The museum halls were excellent, with loads of engines, and plenty of things to look at.

Turn table

First the group visited the Great Hall. We split up into smaller groups, and started looking around the huge engines. Watched the impressive turn table in action, and watched a play.

If only he could get the boat home! Model trainsModel trains

We then moved to a side hall, where a lot of unusual objects were found. Including a model boat which one of our Cub Scouts wanted to take home, and loads of model trains. In the words of one of our Cub Scouts everything must have cost millions, well he said it so much we did begin to believe him ourselves by the end!

Inside the Bullet Train Inside Thomas

We then watched a play about the impressive Bullet Train, which was capable of 183 miles per hour. We then sat in one of its carriages, although Thomas the Tank was just as impressive for some.

Lunch time What five cakes!

Having fun Taking pictures

Lunch was eaten inside one of the carriages in the museum.

A group photo was taken from the bridge inside the railway museum, and two of the 'Ferry Explorers' were pictured on the Ferry bench.

The group also visited the Interactive Hall. This allowed all the Cubs to pull loads of levers and press loads of buttons, heaven for some of them. Unfortunately we then left the museum to find the weather was really wet. Meaning our tour of York had to be cancelled, but the lads were quite happy returning to their adopted home.

Investiture 3

On returning from York we held a very special moment. This was the investiture of two very new Cub Scouts. By far the nicest moment of the weekend for me, meaning that two very enthusiastic new Cubs had joined our Pack.

Arkela teaching the Cubs to gamble!

As it was very wet on Saturday a large number of games were organised. These included bingo, and a few card games. No that is not money on the table, your eyes must be deceiving you!

On Sunday we went swimming at Abbey Leisure Centre in Selby. The Cubs love swimming, so this went down very well. On returning to the campsite, a few more pictures were taken and we set off home.

As you can see they were quite tired in my car, but they certainly had great fun.
