Tarporley Cub Weekend

 Friday 26th - 28th October 2007

A total of 3 Leaders, 2 Explorers, and 15 Cub Scouts went on this years Cub weekend. Once again the weekend was spent in Tarporley, with visits to Hawkstone Park and Jodrill Bank Observatory. An excellent weekend, made all the better with some very good Cub Scouts. Thanks also to Kinnerton for the use of their minibus, it was a brilliant help.

On Friday we arrived at the headquarters in Tarporley. Our first task was to construct the 20 beds which we had brought, it left leaders wishing they had a different name or having nightmares whilst laying on them. Obviously the Cubs were all excited, but eventually they settled down for the evening.

The next day was very active. It started with an excellent visit to Hawkstone Park and Follies. This is a walk around a park, but with lots of unusual caves, towers, bridges, and unusual objects which they call follies. It was there Halloween weekend, which included a treasure hunt and a lot of scary people. Unfortunately some Shropshire locals were a little bit too scary for 8 or 9 year old Cubs, and I soon had about five clinging to my legs. strange really I would have expected the Shropshire creatures to run away first! The walk involved about 6 miles of walking, but they all did extremely well.

On returning from the park, we had food and held our Halloween night and indoor campfire. Doughnuts on strings, apple bobbing, push the peanut, and a few more things. Finished off with our own songs, and our poor attempt at tiring the little Cubs out! Once again getting to sleep was a nightmare, but a few threats later and we were ok.

In the morning we went swimming in Wilmslow, and on the return trip home visited Jodrill Bank Observatory. A bit of a shame about the observatory now, as a lot of the things which used to be there have gone. However the swimming was fine, and they all were very well behaved.

Overall a very good weekend, and thanks to Tarporley for hosting us again, the kids for being great, and most of all Becky and Luke who were just fine examples of Explorer Young Leaders!
